Spaceboy I've missed you spinning round my head...

Ares I-X is the first test flight in the Ares I program, a system for human spaceflight currently under development by NASA.  It was successfully launched this morning at 11:30 AM EST.

Beautiful.  Just Beautiful.

It was the first rocket launched by the US in over 25 years.  It was amazing to see a real rocket again.

Once again, I was saddened to see that none of my peers really cared.  Most of them have grown up in a world where man had already landed on the moon.  Most of them have grown up in a world where we already have an International Space Station.  When voicing my excitement regarding this morning's launch, they merely said, "We already have a bunch of stuff up there anyways, Its just a rocket".

Whatever.

The launch was truly stunning, watch the video here...

the video from nasa really is stunning.

i had a 15 or 20 minute conversation with the principal investigator for the project i'm working on in grad school today about the space program and the dangerously scarce interest in discovery and what it means for others branches of science and research. luckily it seems the self absorbed majority sees the utility in biological research because of invention that personally helps them and their loved ones in the present, but it's baffling and a shame their foresight is too limited to care about space.
